The Shout South VE Team is a local group of Amateur Radio Operators that voluntarily provide license testing in affiliation with the ARRL, American Radio Relay League, in promotion of the Amateur Radio hobby. The test sessions are open to anyone that wants to gain entry into the Amateur Radio hobby by passing their Technician license exam or upgrade their current FCC License to General or Amateur Extra.
This morning, Saturday February 14, 2026, was a busy session for the Shout South crew. 2 unlicensed gentlemen passed their element 2 exam and will be granted their Technician licenses from the FCC in a few days. A current Technician license holder took and passed his General or Element 3 exam. Finally, A General class operator took and passed his Amateur Extra or element 4 exam.
The Technician license is the entry level license to Amateur Radio. This class of license allows operation on the VHF and UHF bands with some limited access to the HF bands in simplistic terms.
The General class license is the big step in the Amateur Radio Hobby. This license greatly expands upon the frequency privileges by opening up the vast majority of HF bands available for Amateur use in the USA.
The Amateur Extra class license is the highest and most regarded license in the Amateur Radio world. This license expands upon the General class license privileges by expanding the operating edges of most of the HF bands. The knowledge needed to pass this exam is vast and diverse but includes all the basics needed for elements 2 and 3. This license also allows many options for Vanity Call Signs, similar to vanity license plates for your vehicles, for lack of a better analogy.
The Shout South VE Team would like to extend our Congratulations to the newly licensed “Hams” as well as those that achieved their upgrades today! The Sumner County Amateur Radio Association also offers a free one year membership to all newly licensed Technicians that take their exams with the Shout South VE Team.
