Sumner County Amateur Radio Association supports the Boy Scouts of America

Posted on July 6, 2025

June and July are the summer months when kids and young adults are out of school and enjoying their summer vacation.  Some go on family vacations.  Some enjoy the ability to play video games late into the night 7 days per week.  Some do nothing at all.  Then there are some that go to to the Boxwell Reservation in Lebanon Tennessee to work on their scouting achievements and progress.

During the early days of June Seve, W4STX, the SCARA Secretary/Treasurer received an email looking for Amateur radio operators to assist with the Scouts working on their Radio Merit Badge.

June 23rd was the first session the regular instructor could not make it due to scheduling conflicts.  Steve and Brian, NG2S, rose to the challenge and agreed to teach the Radio Merit Badge class to the Scouts at Boxwell.  Steve took Module 1 and Brian took Module 2.  Working as a team Module 3 went by fast and then the real fun started.  Steve took half the crew out on a fox hunt while Brian stayed back and instructed the other half of the class to build their very own 2m tape measure yagi antennas. The Scouts swapped lessons to finish out the day.

The second session was July 2nd but the third session for July 3rd was cancelled.

In total 8 Scouts completed all the requirements for their Radio Merit Badges.

The Sumner County Amateur Radio Association was proud to have supported local Scouts and assisting these fine young men in progressing towards achieving their long term goals as well as bring radio into the lives of youth. Being good ambassadors of Amateur Radio should be a goal of every club!
